Pai's grandfather is the chieftain of their tribe. So he decided to train the village boys and hopefully to find a new one to be the inheitor of the chieftain. Therefore, he sets up a school for the boys to learn Maori 's culture.
One of the lessons is to teach the boys to use taiaha. A Taiaha is a traditional weapon of the Maori of New Zealand, which is used for striking or parrying.
When Pai learned that his grandfather would like to form the school, she is interested to learn how to use, wield the taiaha. However, This is traditionally reserved for boys, not for girls. Therefore, Pai secretly learns from his uncle. She also secretly follows his grandfather's lessons.
One day, Pai is in bad mood due to she cannot to take the culture class. So, she walk toward the back yard of the classroom to practice herself. One of the boys try to comfort her, but Pai wield the taiaha to strike him and win. His grandfather gets mad at her when he finds out that Pai wins the taiaha fight against the boy. The truly reason is that his grandfather think Pai break their tribe's custom to use the taiaha.
To be continued.
